- Shagufta K Iqbal, Saili Katebe
September’s instalment from the ever excellent Milk Poetry features sets from Shagufta Iqbal & Saili Katebe.
Shagufta is an award-winning artist and poet described by gal-dem as a poet whose work ‘leaves you validated but aching – her narratives are important, heart-wrenching and relatable.’ Her poetry collection Jam Is For Girls, Girls Get Jam published by Bristol-based Burning Eye Books, has been recommended by Nikesh Shukla (editor of the 2016 best-selling ‘The Good Immigrant’) as ‘a social political masterclass in its exploration of cities, cultures, race, food and family’. She is the Founder of the Yoniverse Collective, who run the spoken word night Golden Tongue.
Saili Katebe is a BBC Slam Runner Up and Milk Superslam Winner who often writes under the name “The Blissful Nomad”. Feeding off the love and energy from the Bath and Bristol Poetry scene has seen him going from strength to strength. What began as a fascination with words and rhyme schemes has become a vehicle for carrying lessons he has learned on his pilgrimage through life. Mesmerising, educational, inspiring.
