Rooted

Venue: The Station
Price: £1-£20

Rooted is a contemporary dance theatre production bringing together unheard
stories from those living in isolation. Performed by passionate young dancers using visceral group choreography, it examines what it means to feel alone.

Rooted is directed and choreographed by emerging young artist Deepraj Singh. Having grown up in Bristol’s St Paul’s, Deepraj found a sense of community in dance.

“I started my dance career when I was little. For me it was all about socialising and connecting with people without the need for speaking. Through Rooted, we’re showing that loneliness can come about when people are confronted with something new. This definitely affects BAME communities massively, so we’re exploring the duality of isolation and assimilation.

Personally, I still struggle today with the fact no one in dance looks like me – there’s no contemporary dancer with a turban that I know of…anywhere. So I feel responsibility for showing other kids from my background that it is possible to go forward and do something creative, no matter where you come from.”

As sharing food has the power to bridge gaps between communities and stir conversations, a meal will take place before the show. A Q&A with Deepraj Singh, young people who consulted for the performance and industry professionals will follow each performance.

An open rehearsal for Rooted will be held on Saturday June 22 at 3pm at The Station, Silver Street, BS1 2AG as part of Loneliness Awareness Week: June 17-23 2019

Creative Youth Network builds supportive relationships with young people from all backgrounds across the South West to help them reach their own potential and live fulfilling lives.

Working with diverse communities in Bristol and South Gloucestershire, one of the issues Creative Youth Network tackles on a daily basis is the need for young people to find their community and a sense of belonging. Being accepted by others is integral to building healthy self-esteem, communication skills and confidence, which are crucial to young people achieving their potential.

Through conversations and engaging young people through creativity, a performance is being developed to raise awareness in the local community on the struggles of young people.
