St. Louis Shag Weekender

Date: Saturday, Feb 22 2020 - Sunday, Feb 23 2020
Venue: Southbank
Price: £22-£45

Quite possibly two of the most knowledgeable St. Louis Shag dancers in the UK, Edinburgh-based teachers Rebecca and Adam, are coming to Bristol’s friendly Southbank Club for a whole weekend of teaching. You can learn the fundamentals of St. Louis Shag all the way through to the nifty moves that give the dance its wonderful signature fluidity and style.

Saturday classes will be suitable for anyone who hasn’t tried St. Louis Shag before, or has only done a taster. Sunday will add more on top: If you’re already comfortable with the basic footwork, position changes and simple turns in St. Louis Shag, you can sign up for Sunday only.

All classes will be suitable for anyone who has done at least a few months of partner dancing of any kind.

Although St. Louis Shag is danced to swing music, it has its own unique feel that’s quite different from other swing dance styles. Collegiate Shag emerged in the late 1910s/early ’20s and is closely related to quicksteps and foxtrots of the era. St. Louis Shag is a later dance, from the late ’30s/early ’40s, and it’s a clear descendant of other earlier Jazz dances such as Lindy Hop and Charleston, done with a specific style as was danced in St. Louis, Missouri.

Adam Harries and Rebecca Brouwers are the perfect team for introducing anyone to the world of swing jazz – their real focus is on the faster side of things, and in particular the various fast Shags, such as the St. Louis Shag. While Rebecca has been dancing since a child, Adam only started dancing once he graduated – but his knowledge and love of jazz music combined with Rebecca’s dancing expertise helped propel their dance journey forward. Their diverse backgrounds help them to deliver engaging, thoughtful classes for anyone from beginners to seasoned pros.
