This Japanese animation is the first CGI entry in the Lupin the Third franchise and is also the first to be released since the death of its creator, who went by the name of Monkey Punch. It attempts to capture the spirit of Indiana Jones, as gentleman thief Arsène Lupin III and his crew embark on a globe-trotting quest to find a mechanical maguffin known as the Bresson Diary. Ranged against them are a bunch of dastardly Nazi treasure-hunters who plan to use the device to restore the Third Reich.
Reviews have been positive, with Variety remarking that: “This lavish, technically polished animated caper . . . delivers high-octane entertainment but plays safe with the canon.”
