Olivia Wilde‘s directorial debut delivers a smart and funny F-rated (written, directed by and starring talented women) twist on the Superbad-style teen coming-of-age comedy.
The set-up is pretty familiar: fearing that they’ve been missing out, two staid, neurotic, over-achieving high school chums decide to embark on an epic orgy of bad behaviour on the night before graduation. In Wilde’s hands – and those of the four female scriptwriters – this becomes a fresh, original and authentic character-driven romp. It’s also excellently cast, especially when it comes to the breakout performances by the talented central duo in their first major leading roles: Beanie Feldstein (sister of Jonah Hill, last seen in Lady Bird) and Kaitlyn Dever (last seen in Beautiful Boy).
