Cinema Rediscovered: Simon & Laura + intro

Director
Muriel Box
Certificate
PG
Running Time
87 mins

It’s 1955 and there’s just the one TV channel to choose from: the BBC. Theatrical couple Simon (Peter Finch) and Laura Foster (Kay Kendall) agree to revive their ailing careers by starring in a new TV show following the lives of a happily married couple. Alas, bickering Simon and Laura are far from happily married. Adapted from a stage play and directed by Muriel Box – one of the leading female filmmakers of the 1950s, who’s largely forgotten today – this sharp, insightful comedy antiticpated the rise of reality TV.
