Austrian filmmaker Johann Lurf’s ★, for this is its official title, has given rise to an awful lot of purple prose: “These stellar instances, riven from context with sound intact—ambient hums, grand orchestral scores, pedantic explanations, dreamy speculation—are magical fields of darkness sprinkled with possibilities. Lurf’s jazzy editing, balancing tranquil concentration and jumpy jitters based on his methodology of retaining each clip’s length, image and sound, sends the audience on a journey across the tones of promise and threat that emanate from the cosmos,” etc., etc., ad nauseum.
Strip this all away and what you have is an intriguing project for which Lurf extracted images of starry skies from no fewer than 553 very different films, from sci-fi flicks to avant-garde shorts, dating from the early years of cinema to the present day, and strung them together in chronological order. The result is a suitably cosmic trip, man.
