Don’t Go Gentle: A Film About IDLES
- Director
- Mark Archer
- Running Time
- 75 mins
No matter how often frontman Joe Talbot insists that “we are not a fucking punk band”, the media will persist in describing Bristol’s IDLES as just that. Still, at least they’ve injected some genuine rock’n’roll excitement into the city’s traditionally dreary and soporific music scene and helped us move on from being tr*p-h*p central in the eyes of outsiders.
This new documentary was created by AF Gang – the passionate, dedicated online community/support group that sprung up in their wake. Typically, it’s no fawning act of adulation but a warts’n’all portrait of the band’s development from feeble indie-pop act – from a time when indie bands “looked good but sounded boring” as Talbot puts it – to furious rock monster.
Here’s the official synopsis: “Don’t Go Gentle captures the 10 year journey of IDLES’ struggle, grief and moving determination. Exploring their vulnerabilities through their experience, lyrics and sound, we learn the reasons why these five individuals have connected with legions of people across the world. We see just how that relationship unfolds in the most courageous and positive of human ways.
is needed now More than ever
“In a time when the ground is shifting beneath our feet, where open communication and truthful reflection are more vital than ever, we journey with lead singer Joe Talbot and the band as they tear across stages, knocking down stereotypes, empowering fans to talk about mental health and the realities we may not feel comfortable to speak about.”
The Cube’s screening on July 10 will be followed by a Q&A with filmmaker and former Idles guitarist Andy Stewart.
