Four years after the bankruptcy of MTGox’s global Bitcoin trading platform in February 2014, this documentary attempts to decipher the complex personality of Mark Karpelès, the former MTGox owner and CEO. Simple geek, genius, manipulator, scammer, who really is this young Frenchman living in Tokyo?
The story of MT Gox’s collapse centres on the disappearance of some 850,000 Bitcoins currently valued at around $8 billion, making it the biggest digital heist (or heist of any kind for that matter) ever. Whether involved or just negligent, Karpelès has questions to answer. Effortless French is the culmination of 13 hours of exclusive interviews given by Karpelès himself.
This screening by the Rebel Film Festival is followed by a Q&A with the film’s directors Vincent Gonon and Xavier Sayanoff. There will also be a pop-up bitcoin bar where you can exchange your magic cryptocurrency for alcoholic refreshment from Bristol brewery Left Handed Giant Brewing Co.
