Minding the Gap

Director
Bing Liu
Certificate

Running Time
93 mins

Yes, it’s a skateboarding documentary. But wait – come back! Bing Liu‘s feature debut is much more than this niche categorisation might suggest.

Shot over the course of 12 years, Minding the Gap has all the stunts and faceplants that you might expect from the genre, but it also delves a lot deeper into the lives and difficult family backgrounds of Bing and his chums in the recession-hit rust belt town of Rockford, Illinois. As Esquire noted: “Don’t be fooled into thinking this is just a skateboarding documentary: Minding the Gap is a captivating film about deprivation, friendship, race, violence, family, and the choices made by three young men who skate like their lives depend on it – because they do.”
