The only sentient critters to get a worse press than Jeremy Corbyn, these rodent scuttlers take centre stage in Herzog-influenced Theo Anthony‘s well-received, blackly comic documentary, which focuses on people who love ’em and those who seek to exterminate them (the ‘rat rubout crew’) in John Waters’ home city of Baltimore. “There’s never been a rat problem in Baltimore,” argues one contributor. “It’s always been a people problem”.
Indeed, although there are as many rats in Baltimore as there are humans, the film is not just about rodents. Anthony also overlays historical maps to tease out shameful truths about social and racial segregation.
