Afrika Eye: La Promesse

Director
Luc Dardenne, Jean-Pierre Dardenne
Certificate
15
Running Time
90 mins

The Dardenne brothers’ feature debut from 1999, which didn’t get much of a UK cinema release. It’s a coming of age story in which young Belgian Igor grows up against the backdrop of trafficking and exploitation of illegal workers. His father, Roger, doubles up as both a trafficker and slumlord. Things start to unravel when one of the workers is killed and guilt-ridden Igor finds himself torn between his father and the man’s family, to whom he has made a promise.

It’s back on screen as part of the Afrika Eye film festival.
