A Manchester-set drama about Jehovah’s Witnesses by a first-time director may be something of a hard sell, but Daniel Kokotajlo‘s debut has been well received on the festival circuit.

It’s the story of a mother’s strained relationship with her two adult daughters, one of whom is knocked up by a non-Witness and subjected to ‘disfellowship’ (their equivalent of excomminication) while her ailing sibling requires a blood transfusion – which is, of course, forbidden under those daft religious rules. A former Jehovah’s Witness himself, Kokotajlo takes a careful, even-handed approach.
