Cinema Rediscovered: Eureka

Director
Nic Roeg
Certificate
18
Running Time
130 mins

Having struck lucky in the Klondike, prospector Gene Hackman finds himself a hugely wealthy man 20 years on. But he’s not a happy chappy. “Once I had it all; now I just have everything,” opines the parnoid and suspicious moneybags as his daughter (Theresa Russell) marries a gigolo fortune hunter (Rutger Hauer) and wrong ‘un Joe Pesci unleashes the violence.

Slated as a “self-indulgent melodrama” back in 1983, when it was barely released, Nic Roeg‘s complex, multi-layered drama is ripe for reassessment. It makes a rare return to the big screen to conclude the  The Balance of Things: the Cinematic Imagination of Nic Roeg strand of Cinema Rediscovered.
