Victor Sjostrom’s dark, stylish silent classic, which was a great influence on Bergman’s The Seventh Seal. Adapted from Nobel Prize-winning Swedish author Selma Lagerlof‘s novel Thy Soul Shall Bear Witness! it tells of the phantom carriage and its driver, Death. Legend has it that if you are the last person to die in the last minute of the last day of the year, you have to take over as coachman for the next twelve months.
