This latest product of Uplifting and Inspirational Britcom Factory that previously gave us the likes of The Full Monty, Billy Elliot and, most recently, Military Wives boasts a story that may seem very familiar indeed. That’s partly because it was previously told in the 2015 documentary Dark Horse.
Louise Osmond won the Sundance Film Festival audience award for that crowd-pleasing culture clash film about a Welsh barmaid and her working class Valleys chums who took on the snooty toffs of the nag-racing world with a champion racehorse that they raised on her allotment. The plot is also bizarrely similar to that of the little-seen 2012 drama Outside Bet, starring the late Bob Hoskins. In this version, Toni Collette is cast as the barmaid. The director is TV veteran Euros Lyn, whose credits include Happy Valley and umpteen episodes of Doctor Who.
