Lauded Russian director Andrei Zvyagintsev‘s fourth film puts a contemporary, if typically bleak spin on the classic noir thriller. Elena (Nadezhda Markina) is a nurse from a humble background who’s married to wealthy Vladimir (Andrey Smirnov) and lives in considerable comfort. Alas, each spouse detests the other’s offspring from their previous marriages. When Vladimir falls ill, questions of inheritance are raised . . .

It’s back on screen in the ‘shed’s January Andrei Zvyagintsev Sunday brunch season, screened as an appetiser for his new one, Loveless, which opens in February.
