Daft belief in witchcraft across Africa can have terrible consequences. Given that this is underpinned by misogyny rather than supposed tribal traditions, it’s hardly surprising that the victims are mostly women. Enter Zambian-born, Cardiff-based filmmaker Rungano Nyoni.
Refreshingly, rather than turning out a heavy-duty world cinema misery flick on the subject, she’s chosen to tease out its absurdities with satire. This is the deadpan tale of a little Zambian girl who’s accused of witchcraft by fellow villagers and packed off to a witch camp (yup, there really are such things), where a corrupt official seizes the opportunity to get rich quick by exploiting her alleged powers. It’s back on screen in the Watershed’s Reclaiming the Witch season.
