For its American release, this was entitled My Salinger Year. But depressingly, the UK distributor seems to think that its potential Brit audience will have no idea of who J.D. Salinger was.
It’s based on Joanna Rakoff‘s memoir and has been described as doing the Devil Wears Prada thing for the 1990s New York literary scene. Recent graduate and aspiring writer Joanna (Margaret Qualley) lands a job as assistant to J.D. Salinger’s literary agent Margaret (Sigourney Weaver). But rather than sending out the standard generic response to the great recluse’s fan mail she starts to adopt his voice to personalise her responses.
