First-time feature director Melina Matsoukas puts a provocative ‘black lives matter’ spin on the Bonnie and Clyde/Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry/Thelma and Louise-style drama with this tense and timely road movie.

Driving home after a non-starter of a first date, easygoing Slim (Get Out star Daniel Kaluuya) and uptight lawyer Queen (newcomer Jodie Turner-Smith) are pulled over by a belligerent cop. The situation swiftly gets out of hand. Result: one dead white cop and two young black lovers on the run, fearing little chance of a fair trial if they’re caught. As news spreads, the couple quickly become folk heroes. But – hey – we all know how these films end, right? Go here for our full review.
