“Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again.” It’s one of the great opening lines in fiction, and Ben Wheatley has wisely chosen not to tamper with it in his adpatation, which cleaves more closely to Daphne du Maurier‘s novel than the great 1940 Hitchcock version.
Lily James plays the new Mrs de Winter, who arrives in Cornwall after being swept off her feet by hunksome Armie Hammer, only to struggle in the shadow of her eponymous predecessor. Kristin Scott Thomas, on especially icy form, seems perfectly cast as sinister housekeeper Mrs. Danvers. This being yet another of those Netflix films means that you only have a limited opportunity to catch it on the big screen before it’s made available for streaming.
