Anthony Hopkins was an unexpected Best Actor Oscar winner (everyone thought the late Chadwick Boseman would get the sentimental vote) for this powerful drama about the experience of dementia, which the Hollywood Reporter described as “the best film about the wages of aging since Amour“.
The Father also won the Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar, which was shared between Christopher Hampton and debuting director Florian Zeller, the film being adapted from Zeller’s play Le Père. Olivia Colman bagged an Oscar nomination for her typically outstanding supporting performance as the octogenarian’s long-suffering daughter, who tries to persuade him to employ a carer as his grip on reality fades.
