Andre Rieu’s annual programme of light popular classics in the Vrijthof pulls huge crowds not only to Maastricht but also to cinemas worldwide. These events regularly break attendance records, reaping the sort of cash that popsters can only dream about.

This year, the alarmingly popular, bouffant-haired, self-styled ‘king of the waltz’ has got the horn – and, indeed, all the other instruments in his 60-piece Johann Strauss Orchestra – as he delights mature punters with his own versions of classic love songs, from the worlds of popular and classical music.
