Super 8 Sculpture Films by Ian Helliwell
is needed now More than ever
June 7, 8pm
Bringing together modern sculpture, brutalist architecture and experimental electronic music, this fascinating series of films explores the early work of distinguished British sculptor William Pye.
Split-screen, animation, abstraction and documentary, are interwoven with Pye’s previously unscreened personal super 8 material from the 1960s and 70s. Self-taught multi-media artist Ian Helliwell sifted through more than 70 super 8mm reels to make these films, which reinterpret Pye’s original home movie footage. He’ll be on hand to talk about the films.
Straight 8 Says ‘Hello Bristol’
June 8, 8pm
A selection of films by the global network of Super 8 enthusiasts that is Straight 8. They encourage folk to make a short film on one cartridge of Super 8mm cine film with no editing, no re-takes, no grade, no post-production. The visuals are completed in-camera, editing only with each pull of the camera’s trigger.
Super 8 Fete
June 9, 11am
A full day of Super 8 workshops, gear fixing, merchandise, stalls, games and grub. Special performances/screenings in the cinema include a conversation and film show by Hugh Metcalfe from Suffolk who has shot over 300 Super 8 films. Hugh will also perform a music set to another set of films from his archive. you’re invited to bring along your own home movies to screen too.
Shoot-Process-Screen
June 9, 11am-5pm
A hands-on DIY introduction to shooting on Super 8 film and the developing process. Films will be processed on the day and screened as a warm up for Rough Cut & Ready Dubbed. Note that there’s a £40 entry fee for this session.
Rough Cut & Ready Dubbed
June 9, 8pm
A proper period punk rock doc shot on super 8, blown up to 16mm and buried in the vaults for more than 20 years. Thrill to the sights and sounds of Stiff Little Fingers, Cockney Rejects, The Selecter, Patrik Fitzgerald, Purple Hearts, Sham 69, John Peel, A Certain Ratio, Tony Wilson, and, erm, Garry Bushell.
Abridged and Pakcaged Film Festival
June 10, 2pm
