Vengeful Vitellia, daughter of deposed emperor Vitellio, conspires to have new emperor Tito bumped off after he spurns her. But her plot is complicated by the fact that she’s having it away with besotted chosen assassin Sesto, who is also Tito’s best chum.

Dashed off in something of a hurry just before he carked it, Mozart’s final opera is based loosely on the life of Roman Emperor Titus. It was commissioned to celebrate the coronation of the Emperor Leopold II as King of Bohemia in 1791 and is infrequently performed today. Indeed, there’s only been one previous Glyndebourne production. Claus Guth‘s new take is conducted by Glyndebourne’s Music Director Robin Ticciati.
