Matthew Bourne’s Romeo and Juliet

Director
Matthew Bourne
Certificate
12A
Running Time
93 mins

You know the story: star-cross’d lovers, tragedy, etc. Matthew Bourne‘s contemporary dance reworking of the Bard’s play is set in the not too distant future in ‘The Verona Institute’. Here ‘difficult’ young people are mysteriously confined by a society that seeks to divide and crush their youthful spirit and individuality. The bastards.

Filmed live at Sadler’s Wells with a suitably youthful cast and new orchestrations of the Prokofiev score by Terry Davies, it’s a production that has followed Bourne’s previous hits such as Swan Lake and The Red Shoes in earning huge critical acclaim. “Bourne and his superb dancers inject visceral new life into Shakespeare’s overworked tragedy,” was The Observer‘s verdict.
