National Theatre Encore: A Midsummer Night’s Dream

Director
Nicholas Hytner
Certificate
12A
Running Time
180 mins

Hermia loves Lysander, but is betrothed to Demetrius. So naturally the lovers flee into the magical woods where a bunch of ‘rude mechanicals’ are rehearsing a poorly written play which they intend to perform at the wedding of Theseus and Hippolyta. Meanwhile, a dispute between fairy king Oberon and queen Titania is about to go full Hogwarts on everyone’s asses.

Building on the success of his immersive staging of Julius Caesar, Nicholas Hytner‘s production of the Bard’s most popular romcom transforms the Bridge Theatre into a forest dreamworld of flying fairies, contagious fogs and moonlight revels, with roving punters following the action on foot. Gwendoline Christie, Oliver Chris, David Moorst and Hammed Animashaun lead the cast as Titania, Oberon, Puck and Bottom.
