National Theatre Encore: Julius Caesar

Director
Nicholas Hytner
Certificate
15
Running Time
135 mins

Caesar returns from war a conquering hero, but faces mutiny on the home front in the Bard’s epic political tragedy of spin and betrayal.

Clearly, there’s plenty of potential to tease out the modern political relevance. Nicholas Hytner doesn’t disappoint, with David Calder’s Caesar recast as a populist, soundbitey demagogue who so outrages the educated elite that they have him done in, prompting the outbreak of civil war. Ben Whishaw and Michelle Fairley play Brutus and Cassius, while David Morrissey is Mark Antony. The play is broadcast live from the Bridge Theatre.
