National Theatre Encore: Salomé
- Certificate
- 15
- Running Time
- 200 mins
You know the story: Princess Salome promises to perform the erotic dance of the seven veils for her dirty ol’ stepfather, King Herod, if he will grant her one wish. To Herod’s dismay, she demands the head of John the Baptist.
Yael Farber‘s reimagining seeks to empower Salomé by placing her at the centre of a revolution in an occupied desert nation. Reviews have been rather, um, mixed (“Her merkin has more personality,” sniffed The Grauniad of Farber’s Salomé). The play is broadcast live from the National Theatre on June 22, with encore screenings to follow. The easily offended may wish to note that this one is rated 15 for all the nudity.
