National Theatre Encore: Yerma

Director
Simon Stone
Certificate

Running Time
200 mins

Australian writer/director Simon Stone‘s radical reinvention of Lorca’s 1934 play about a woman who cannot conceive has received universal acclaim, not least for Billie Piper‘s powerful performance in the lead role. This won her the Best Actress gong at the Evening Standard Theatre Awards.

Stone relocates the play from its original rural setting to modern-day London beset by gentrification, where its heroine is that most contemporary of women: a lifestyle journalist and blogger. ‘Yerma’ is Spanish for ‘barren’, in case you’re wondering. The Independent called this “a shatteringly powerful reinvention of a familiar classic”. The play is broadcast live on Aug 31, with encore screenings to follow.
