You know the story: naïve young soldier Don Jose gets the hots for fiery gypsy temptress Carmen. Such is his lust that he deserts the army and abandons his childhood sweetheart. Alas, the fickle hottie promptly falls for dashing toreador Escamillo. Oh dear. This really isn’t going to end well, is it?

Originally created for the Frankfurt Opera, Australian director Barrie Kosky‘s highly physical makeover of Bizet’s lusty staple dispenses with tradition and incorporates music composed for the opera but now rarely heard. Russian mezzo-soprano Anna Goryachova makes her Royal Opera debut in the title role.
