Excitable, eccentric inventor Flint Lockridge (voiced by Bill Hader) comes up with a device that can turn water into food. Soon it’s raining hamburgers, ice cream, steaks, hot dogs, and sweets. For once, the geek is a hero and gets to romance surprisingly bright weather girl Sam Sparks (Anna Faris). But will he ever earn the respect of his monobrowed father (James Caan)? And could the increasingly sizeable precipitation portions threaten the whole world? Based on a kids’ picture book, this is yet another CGI cartoon with eye-popping 3D effects. The whole premise spins off from a groaner pun (‘a meatier shower’), but the hits keep coming – in neat little unexpected bits like the nerd discovering the fun of a snowball fight only to show disturbing aggression in pelting innocents or the continual reappearance of Flint’s runaway earlier inventions at the worst possible times. The 3D environments are big, pleasing, detailed enough to reward repeat viewings and make for set-piece action, comedy and emotional sequences liable to leave you exhausted as well as eyestrained.
