Film & Food Fest 2021: Sonic the Hedgehog

Director
Jeff Fowler
Certificate
PG
Running Time
99 mins

Those who don’t spend their lives glued to consoles may be forgiven for wondering whether this isn’t a little late for the Sega computer game franchise to reach the big screen. Sony acquired the rights back in 2013, but the live-action/CGI film underwent a long and convoluted production process. What’s more, it nearly fell at the last hurdle with a Cats-style overwhelmingly negative fan reaction to the first trailer.

The speedy hog has now been completely redesigned so he doesn’t tumble into uncanny valley. Ben Schwartz voices the unusually-hued spiny mammal, while Jim Carrey is cast as the antagonist, Dr. Robotnik.

The film is back on the big screen outdoors as part of Adventure Cinema’s Film and Food Fest 2021 on the Downs. The event also features street food. Go here for more information and to buy tickets.
