A Quiet Place double bill

Director
John Krasinski
Certificate
15
Running Time
202 mins

John Krasinski (y’know – Jim from the US version of The Office) was perhaps not the first name to spring to mind when you think of horror movie directors. But he turned out an imaginative, suspenseful beastie B-movie with a twist: rather than being filled with all those tired old crashes and jolts, it’s almost completely silent.

That’s because the earth has been invaded by malevolent alien critters that hunt by sound. The only away to avoid being scoffed is to shut the fuck up, which is how survivalist Krasinski and his wife Emily Blunt manage to survive. Complicating matters somewhat is the fact that their daughter is deaf. Refreshingly, she’s played by deaf actress Millicent Simmonds, who can also be seen in Todd Haynes’ Wonderstruck.

This double-bill also offers your first opportunity to see the sequel, imaginatively titled A Quiet Place II. Krasinski is back behind the camera, while Emily Blunt, Millicent Simmonds and Noah Jupe reprise their roles from the first film. They’re joined by Cillian Murphy and Djimon Hounsou for this continuation of the story, which conforms to sequel formula by expanding the canvas and introducing new threats.
