Portmanteau horrors – don’tcha just love ’em? From Dead of Night to the first Creepshow, they pack plenty of scares into a series of concise stories. Not this one, though. This one’s crap. It’s framed by a train journey (yep, just like Dr. Terror’s House of Horrors, only crap – did I mention that?). This one’s going to Hell, with God and Satan sharing a carriage to discuss the fate of three individuals whose stores are about to unfold. In The Case of Harry Billings, a fella is whisked to a nuthouse where he’s hypnotised into snaring victims for an organ-harvesting operation. The Case of Greta Connors follows a pair of young lovers who join a death cult. In The Case of Claire Hansen, a henchperson to Beelzebub sets out to destroy mankind.
Nerds may wish to note that these segments are actually edited down from the following justly unreleased horror films:
Cataclysm (1980) (AKA: The Nightmare Never Ends; Satan’s Supper) (edited into the Claire Hansen segment
is needed now More than ever
Death Wish Club (1983) (AKA: The Dark Side of Love; Carnival of Fools; Greta) (edited into the Greta Connors segment)
Scream Your Head Off (1981; unfinished) (edited into the Harry Billings segment)
As if all that wasn’t hilarious enough – on board the train is an awful oh-so- ’80s pop-rock band (spandex, headbands, sax solo, hilarious breakdancing), who are filming a music video for no apparent reason.
