Cinema Rediscovered: Society

Director
Brian Yuzna
Certificate
18
Running Time
99 mins

Bill (Billy Warlock) confides to his shrink that he suspects he’s been adopted and can’t help feeling there’s something wrong with his family – particularly when his sister’s ex-boyfriend produces what seems to be evidence that her coming-out party turned into an incestuous orgy. Crashing a social event, he finds the Los Angeles elite performing a sexual ritual involving shape-shifting, plentiful slime and grotesque physical unions. Legendary FX  man Screaming Mad George goes further than you’d have thought the BBFC would allow back in 1989 in this astonishing directorial debut from Brian Yuzna, which even survives a callow haircut of a performance from Warlock. Quite simply, this is one of the greatest and most under-rated films of the 1980s.

Society makes a welcome return to the screen as part of Cinema Rediscovered‘s welcome Gluttony, Decadence and Resistance season.
