In the Earth

Director
Ben Wheatley
Certificate
15
Running Time
107 mins

In the midst of a pandemic, boffin Dr Martin Lowery (Joel Fry) teams up with park ranger Alma (Ellora Torchia) on a two-day forest journey in the hope of tracking down his missing colleague (Hayley Squires). Along the way, they encounter our old chum Reece Shearsmith.

Since this is a Ben (Kill List, A Field in England, High-Rise) Wheatley movie, would it surprise you to learn that In the Earth becomes an hallucinogenic journey into the heart of darkness? The first proper post-covid pandemic horror, it was conceived during the first lockdown to reflect what everyone was going through. “Movies I was seeing that had been made but released during the pandemic felt very old-fashioned. No one is talking about what has just happened,” says Wheatley. “Covid is going to mark a generation. It felt like making a film in 1946 and not referencing the fact that everyone had just gone through the second world war.”
