A hearing-impaired girl in a small New England town comes over all better after a chinwag with the Virgin Mary and promptly starts performing miracles. When disgraced hack Gerry Fenn (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) – a sceptic from central casting – pitches up to investigate, all hell literally breaks loose as it transpires that the kid wasn’t chatting to Mrs. Virgin after all but our old chum the Evil Entity. Oh, and there’s a priest too. There’s always a priest.

This latest religious horror ticks all theboxes and springs no surprises. It’s adapted from James Herbert’s novel Shine and produced by Sam Raimi, who could probably have doen a lot better with this material if he’d got behind the camera himself.
