Horror in the Caves: Them!

Director
Gordon Douglas
Certificate
PG
Running Time
88 mins

Affectionately parodied in Joe Dante’s brilliant Matinee, this is widely regarded as the best of the 50s “creature features” and was Warner Brothers’ highest-grossing film of 1954. When boffins start nuking the New Mexico desert, ginormous (i.e poorly magnified) ants emerge and infest the Los Angeles drainage system. History records that the film was nominated for an Oscar for its now rather risible effects. In fairness, Them! was also one of the first films to take seriously the potential environmental damage caused by radiation.

It’s back on screen in spooky old Redcliffe Caves as part of Bristol Film Festival‘s ever-popular Halloween week Horror in the Caves season. Go here for ticket information.
