Bristol Film Festival: The Martian

Director
Ridley Scott
Certificate
12A
Running Time
141 mins

If the title Robinson Crusoe on Mars hadn’t already been snaffled by a 1964 film starring Adam (Batman) West, Ridley Scott might have used it for his Gravity/All is Lost-style survival yarn. This facehugger-free science fiction adventure has hapless Matt Damon left behind, presumed dead, when a manned mission to the red planet goes awry during a ferocious storm.

After he perks up, Matt realises that he’s only got enough supplies for a month or so and it’ll take four years for anyone to reach him. Naturally, he decides to make use of all his botanical and mechanical engineering skills to “science the shit” out of his situation in order to stay alive. His next challenge is to find a way of contacting NASA to make them aware that he has not, in fact, carked it. Go here for our full review. This Bristol Film Festival screening takes place in a apt surroundings of the Bristol Planetarium. Go here for ticket details and further information.
