Cinema Rediscovered: You Were Never Really Here

Director
Lynne Ramsay
Certificate
15
Running Time
90 mins

Lynne Ramsay‘s belated follow-up to We Need to Talk About Kevin: a stylish adaptation of Jonathan Ames‘s novel about a soldier-turned-hitman (a beardy Joaquin Phoenix) who’s hired to save the teenage daughter (Ekaterina Samsonov) of a politician from a child prostitution ring, but finds himself caught up in a conspiracy.

That sounds like the plot of a bog-standard Liam Neeson thriller but, as one might expect of Ramsay, this is a moody, dreamlike psychological drama that takes the material to a different place altogether. This screening is part of the Bazin 100 strand of Cinema Rediscovered and will be introduced by Watershed Cinema Curator Mark Cosgrove and film critic Tega Okiti.
