Sitkovetsky Piano Trio & Michael Collins
100 years exactly since the end of World War One, this candlelit event reflects on such a significant centenary with readings and two extraordinary pieces directly borne out of wartime. Stravinsky conceived his L’Histoire du Soldat (The Soldier’s Tale) for performance in the straightened times of the Great War, and the Lausanne premiere was in September 1918. Olivier Messiaen composed his transcendental visions for clarinet, piano, violin and piano while interned in the POW camp Stalag VIII-A at Görlitz. Its first performance, remarkably, was outside and in the rain on 15 January 1941.
