American singer/songwriter Brian Christinzio, better known as BC Camplight, received widespread acclaim for his one-man band take on classic pop songwriting. He was based in Philadelphia, where he wrote much of his 2005 debut album, Hide, Run Away, despite coming close to abandoning his musical project when crippling depression took hold. His perseverance paid off, however, and his original home-recorded tracks were released by One Little Indian.

Wrap your ears around his sound here:

His second album came two years later with sophomore effort Blink of a Nihilist, which again partnered Christinzio’s sunny pop music and darker lyrical themes that ranged from mental illness to murder. It was his last release with One Little Indian, and he subsequently dropped off the radar before relocating to Manchester, England. There he heard Bella Union artist John Grant’s album on the jukebox of his local pub, and decided to get in touch with the indie label. They signed him up and recorded his third album How to Die in the North, which arrived in early 2015. Prepare to be transported by his mournful, introspective lyrics and earworm melodies.
