Bristol folk group The Hotwells Howlers present this musical show, with songs, tunes, readings and images of the Great War and of Bristol, Bath, Somerset and Gloucestershire
“100 years ago our country was looking forward to the end of a devastating war which affected the lives of millions. Since 2014 The Hotwells Howlers have performed their show about the First World War many times, to appreciative audiences in Bristol and in neighbouring areas.
“In this production, the group decided to home in on the war as it affected people in Bristol, North Somerset, Bath and the South of Gloucestershire, drawing on newspaper reports and other narratives of the period, particularly those with a local focus. Where it was artistically justified they have also drawn on songs, poems and images from further afield. The show is informative with both serious and light-hearted songs and music, as well as images and sound effects to match the stories of the war and local people.
is needed now More than ever
“The Hotwells Howlers are a folk music and song group drawn from Bristol and North Somerset. We were commissioned to produce a piece on World War I by the Friends of the Bristol Museum, and it was originally performed in November 2014 to commemorate the outbreak of the Great War. The presentation features songs, tunes, reminiscences and images from the period. It has been performed a number of times since then, and has always been enthusiastically received. The group has been proud and moved to create this work, and it is made in a spirit of love and respect for our forebears.
