Mokoko opens in Wapping Wharf

By Martin Booth  Wednesday Jun 1, 2016

As the doors open on the first morning of business at Mokoko, workers in hi-vis jackets are hard at work on the opposite side of Gaol Ferry Steps inside what will soon become a Better Food shop and Little Victories cafe.

Mokoko, however, is out of the traps in Wapping Wharf first taking up three units split roughly into thirds: a service area with a table groaning under the weight of pastries, an open kitchen from whence those pastries came, and a narrow seating area with overhanging lamps that look like large takeaway coffee cups.

The outside seating area with colourful metal and wooden furniture wasn’t being utilised on a rainy morning, but a steady stream of people walking by bodes well for business in this new development.

Mokoko have arrived from Bath where they have a small cafe on Dorchester Street opposite the bus station.

Their Bristol operation is substantially larger. It says ‘coffee and bakery’ on the signs outside and on Wednesday morning a fresh batch of sausage rolls had made their way out of the oven as one chef put the finishing touches to a spinach and ham tartine.

Popular options for curious first time customers choosing to eat in included the breakfast muffin with pecans and sultanas, a beetroot brownie and a crumbly carrot cake, with coffee from Bath’s Easy Jose.

“It’s all very exciting and new isn’t it,” exclaims one woman in a Breton striped top with fashionably oversized spectacles.

And it’s only going to get more exciting. Mokoko may be here first although strictly they are only the first bricks and mortar operation, with Pizzarova already open in a crate around the corner, soon to be joined by more crates in a development to be called Cargo where Bristol Cider Shop will be moving into alongside other as-yet unannounced businesses.

With the imminent arrivals of cafes, shops, Bertha’s Pizza in the former Mud Dock Deli at the top of Gaol Ferry Steps and Wild Beer bar in a prime corner unit at the bottom, this brand new corner of town is going to be the place to be this summer.
