Marvin Rees’ PR lands top Corbyn job

By Louis Emanuel  Friday Sep 18, 2015

Jeremy Corbyn has appointed Marvin Rees’ communication manager as his new spin doctor.

Kevin Slocombe, who managed Rees’ press relations at the last mayoral elections and had a helping hand getting him selected to run again this year, has been brought into the new Labour leader’s inner circle.

Bristol24/7 understands that the move, which has caught the attention of the mainstream press after Slocombe deleted his Twitter account, is only temporary.

Corbyn has been facing calls to appoint a communications director from some of his own party who say he needs a fresh approach to the mainstream media.

Slocombe, the Communications Workers Union head of communications, worked on Rees’ unsuccessful mayoral bid and had already started work on his campaign for next May’s election when his new appointment came.

Rees has declined an invitation to answer questions from the BBC over whether or not he supports Corbyn as leader.

Slocombe, who has also penned Bristol Rovers columns for Bristol24/7, joins Bristol East MP Kerry McCarthy in Corbyn’s new-look Labour team.

McCarthy was appointed Shadow Environment Secretary earlier this week just days after introducing her Food Waste bill into parliament.

Meanwhile, George Ferguson’s Bristol 1st has appointed a campaign manager in Matt Baker who has also been partly dealing with the party’s press relations.

Baker was the right-hand man to Labour Rochdale MP Simon Danczuk until July this year.
