New ?9m city cycling investment unveiled
A £9.4 million investment to improve cycling in Bristol has been given the green light thanks to extra Government funding.
Over the next three years, the Cycling Ambition Fund is designed to connect workplaces and businesses with communities and neighbourhoods.
The proposed schemes include a route through the city centre linking to the cycle path already in place on Baldwin Street; better routes on Prince Street; an arterial route connecting Filwood to the city centre via the northern slopes; complete missing links and crossing provision; adding cycling signage; and an additional 4,000 cycle parking spaces across the city.
is needed now More than ever
Assistant mayor for place Mark Bradshaw said: “Changing attitudes to travel and leading by example are both key elements of being European Green Capital. This funding is a welcome boost to further develop our local cycling networks and will help to improve both connectivity and safety to shape the network Bristol needs.”
The news comes as work nears completion on changes to St George’s Road, with priority given to motor vehicles coming from Park Street, a new cycle lane heading up to Park Street and new Sheffield stands.
The new cycle programme includes:
- Filwood Quietway – an arterial route connecting Filwood to the city centre via the northern slopes

- Southmead Quietway – improvements to access around the hospital ahead of the new development at Filton Airfield and the North Fringe
- Frome Quietway – completion of a missing link to provide improved access to the existing residents and provide for the future development of over 200 additional houses along the corridor
- Safer Streets spaces – working with the community in Easton to deliver changes to the flow of private motor traffic to discourage ‘rat runs’ through the area while providing access to sustainable modes of transport
- East to west City Centre Quietway – complete missing links and enhancing crossing provision at key sites between Baldwin Street in the city centre to the Quietways networks
