Petition proposes annual closure of M32
Following two days of peace and quiet during the closure of the M32 a petition has been launched to ban traffic on the motorway once a year in favour of a street party.
Robin Stent argues for an annual closure for a community festival. He said on his petition: “The M32 is a constant source of noise, and divides several communities, especially in central Bristol.
“It would be great if once a year it could be closed to traffic and the whole city could come together for a massive street party, with stalls and activities for all ages.”
is needed now More than ever
His idea surfaced during the weekend closure of the motorway for a new bridge to be lifted into place.
The plan comes shortly after chair of St Paul’s Carnival organising committee Cleo Lake revealed a desire to take the festival’s procession down the M32 for its 2018 anniversary.
The way the M32 divides communities was cited as one of the reasons why Bristol lost its bid for European Capital of Culture status in 2008.
Supporters of the petition are also highlighting issues regarding the motorway and its divisive impact on the community.
Fiona Gleed said: “The M32 cuts across Heritage parkland and divides communities. An annual closure would be a chance to rebuild links and could be used for thorough inspection of the surface and structures.”
Local artist Beth Morafon also suggested that the event would be “a marker to indicate how much change is needed in these areas, to help navigate crossing the motorway on foot or by bike”.
Holly Buckley simply said: “Sounds like the sort of thing Bristol would do. Events like this, is what makes Bristol such a fantastic city to live in.”
