The Slurp Shop – restaurant review

By Sofi Carter  Thursday Dec 15, 2016

The team behind Sticks & Broth have opened a sister branch, The Slurp Shop, on Denmark Street.

Sharing a building with Wah Yan Hong Oriental supermarket a stone’s throw from the bottom of Park Street, The Slurp Shop is all about ramen.

The Japanese dish of noodles typically served with meat and vegetables in a broth, is here served topped with spring onions, bean sprouts, a soy egg and a sheet of nori.

‘The Communist’

I was recommended The Communist (£10), a pork bone broth, served with menma, red chillies, black mushroom, slabs of tender pork belly and choi sum.

It is huge and the spice level certainly helps clear out my sinuses. The broth is spicy, the perfect warming meal, and you get plenty of bang for your buck, though it would be far too much for an everyday lunch spot.

The choi sum is crunchy and delicious as is the menma, and the pork falls apart in my mouth.

The gyoza (£5) and the edamame (£4) look ideal for sharing, and I’m assured that the baos (all £4) are delicious too.

Daily changing lunch time deals are chalked up on the blackboard, which would probably be a more lunch-appropriate sized meal and better for the bank account.

Inside The Slurp Shop there is dark wood, sharing tables and a high bar, from behind which comes the hiss and steam of some serious ramen cooking. Graffiti-style murals cover the walls, one of which has been painted by one of the owners.

The Slurp Shop may have a smaller menu than Sticks & Broth, but it has a big heart. You will undoubtedly come away satisfied by the food on offer, cooked and served quickly and efficiently. This team know what they’re doing.
