Bristol protest planned after Chilcot

By Bristol24/7  Wednesday Jul 6, 2016

A protest is being planned in the centre of Bristol after the Chilcot Inquiry revealed former prime minister Tony Blair twisted intelligence to invade Iraq.

Bristol’s Stop the War Coalition are planning the demonstration, called After Chilctot – No More Wars!, at the fountains at 5.30pm on Thursday.

The Chilcot Inquiry, finally published on Wednesday after eight years in the making, revealed that peaceful solutions were not fully explored before the county was taken to war using “flawed” intelligence.

Bristol Stop the War Coalition said: “In March 2003, Britain and the US invaded Iraq. Hundreds of thousands of Iraqis died. Over two hundred British troops died. Iraqi society was destroyed by the invasion and subsequent occupation.

“The seeds were sown which resulted in the rise of ISIS. In 2003 millions of people across the world campaigned against the war. Two million marched through London in February 2003.

“Those in parliament and the media who are now hounding Jeremy Corbyn supported the war; he was at the head of those opposing it, inside and outside parliament.”

Calling for people to join the Bristol demonstration, they added: “Join Bristol’s protest to demand that those who were to blame for this catastrophe are brought to account and that we aren’t led into any more wars.”
